Multicultural Cinderella (Cendrillon) Stories by Mrs. Vilbrun

I celebrate multicuralism through reading in my classroom.  The wonderful story of Cinderella is probably the most popular fairy tale in the world.  Cinderella is known as Cendrillon in French which was read in class last quin.  Students really enjoyed the reading, especially the ones who are from different countries.

Almost every culture seems to have its own version and every storyteller his or her tale.

Here’s what we did for additional class activities

*On a map of the world, find the countries where the Cinderella story the class has read is based.

* Compare illustrations in different versions of the Cinderella to Cendrillon. How do they capture the mood?

*Make a Venn diagram of the differences and similarities in versions of the Cinderella stories and what they both have     in common.  Let the class select a favorite version and act out the story.

Chinese New Year will be celebrated in Mrs. Millers Class on Thursday, February 7th. 2008 is the Year of the Rat, which is also known by its former name of Wu Zhi. Chinese New Year's Eve is known as Chúxī. Chu literally means "change" and xi means "Eve". Celebrated in areas with large populations of ethnic Chinese, Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had a strong influence on the new year celebrations of its geographic neighbors, as well as cultures with whom the Chinese have had extensive interaction. These include Koreans, Mongolians, Nepalese, Bhutanese, Vietnamese, and formerly the Japanese before 1873. In Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and other countries with significant Chinese populations, Chinese New Year is also celebrated, largely by overseas Chinese, but it is not part of the traditional culture of these countries.
